Chicken Broth: 3 Ways

To help us get through the 3 Day Fast here’s my favorite three ways to make chicken broth!

Method 1: Stovetop Chicken Broth The stovetop method is perhaps the most traditional approach to making chicken broth. Here's how it's done:

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken or chicken parts (bones and/or meat)

  • 1 onion, peeled and quartered

  • 2 carrots, washed and chopped

  • 2 celery stalks, washed and chopped

  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed

  • 1 bay leaf

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Place the chicken or chicken parts in a large pot and cover with cold water.

  2. Add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaf, salt, and pepper.

  3. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, skimming off any foam that rises to the surface.

  4. Once the broth has simmered and the flavors have melded, strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container.

  5. Discard the solids and let the broth cool before storing it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Method 2: Slow Cooker Chicken Broth If you prefer a more hands-off approach, making chicken broth in a slow cooker is the way to go. Here's how:

Ingredients and instructions for slow cooker chicken broth are the same as the stovetop method, except:

  • Instead of using a large pot on the stovetop, place all ingredients in a slow cooker.

  • Cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.

  • Strain the broth and store as directed.

Method 3: Instant Pot Chicken Broth For those who crave speed without sacrificing flavor, the Instant Pot method delivers perfectly in a fraction of the time. Here's how to make Instant Pot chicken broth:

Ingredients and instructions for Instant Pot chicken broth are the same as the stovetop method, except:

  • Use an Instant Pot instead of a stovetop pot.

  • Cook on manual mode, high pressure, for 30 minutes.

  • Perform a natural pressure release followed by a quick pressure release.

  • Strain the broth and store as directed.
